Sunday Notes & Reflection

Every Sunday morning message is one that deserves our focus and follow through. Pastor Steve’s blog posts are meant to serve the congregation with sermon notes, thoughts, passages, and follow-up questions to pray on and chew on throughout the week.

Our Values: Honor | Honor reflects the Kingdom, puts others first, and allows wisdom to guide us.

In Romans 12 it says to try and outdo each other in showing honor.

In 1 Samuel 2 it says to honor the house of the Lord.

In Hebrews 13 it says husbands and wives should show each other honor.

In Exodus 20 it says to honor your parents.

In Romans 13 it says to honor governing authorities.

In 1 Timothy 5 it says that leaders who lead well and teach well are worthy of double honor.

In Proverbs 3 it says we should honor God with our wealth.

In Proverbs 21 it says whoever pursues what is right in God’s eyes will find honor.

In 1 Peter 2 it says to honor everyone.

In Leviticus 19 it says to honor the elderly.

In 1 Timothy it says to honor widows.

In John 5 it says to honor Jesus, just as we honor the Father.

All throughout scripture, the idea of honoring and showing a heart of honor towards others and to God is found from front to back.

The reason why so many of the authors of scripture are seemingly all aligned with the idea that honor is a big deal, is because God never changes. He found favor in Adam and Eve when they showed honor, He finds favor in us when we show honor.

In the Greek, which is the language the Bible was written in, along with Hebrew and Aramaic…

Honor means – to show respect, to hold with high esteem, and to find value.

Pair this with the examples of honor that we see in scripture, and the Biblical context of what it means to honor is to show reverence, respect, giving weight or importance to someone or something, and treating others with dignity and worth.

There’s a quote from C.S. Lewis that I’ve always found to be enlightening but terrifying at the same time.

“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.”

If you don’t make worship a regular practice in your own life, you can’t expect to reflect God’s heart.

·         Worship and showing honor to God is where we learn to lay down our identity and put on God’s will for our lives.

“Any man or woman on this earth who is bored and turned off by worship is not ready for heaven.”

A. W. Tozer

Consider the 10 Commandments…they’re all about honor.

You shall have no other Gods but me.

You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.

Respect your father and mother. You must not commit murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal.

You must not give false evidence against your neighbor.

You must not be envious of your neighbor’s goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Honoring God deserves more of our effort. More of our heart. More of us.
